More than 3,000 migrants in the Big Apple have received notices informing them that in order to retain housing they must reapply under the city’s new 60-day limit, according to City Hall. But less than half of the 3,025 migrants who have been forced to reapply have actually done so, indicating the limits seem to be helping make space in the shelter system.New rules require all single adult asylum seekers to reapply for a home every two months. Once their 60 days are up, they are required to leave the shelter where they are living and return to the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown for the reapplication process. The first wave of two-month notices expired in mid-September.The low percentage of those reapplying appears to be opening hard-to-find space in the city’s shelter system that has been overwhelmed with the massive influx of migrants, which was Mayor Eric Adams’ intention when his administration instituted the new rules. On Monday, Adams created a new 60-day rule for migrants living in the city shelter system with kids. The Big Apple is mandated to provide housing for anyone who needs it as part of a decades-old rule, known as the right to shelter.
