A senior aide to a Los Angeles councilman has resigned after being slammed for making Holocaust jokes about Amy Schumer.Josh Androsky, a top adviser to Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez, made the vile comments on X during an exchange with the political podcast TrueAnon, the LA Times reported. The posts included puns about concentration camps and disparaging comments about the comedian’s weight.“Amy Schumer is particularly sensitive to Jewish deaths due to her experience in the Holocaust. The Nazis named a concentration camp after her. It was called Da Cow,” TrueAnon reportedly posted, apparently referring to Dachau, where tens of thousands of people died.Androsky, a former comedian who is Jewish, replied by stating that “it’s f–ked up that you would say this about her when you know it was actually Cowschwitz,” an apparent reference to Auschwitz, where more than 1.1 million people are believed to have perished.Schumer recently described her Jewish heritage on Instagram, where she mentioned a relative who had “numbers from Auschwitz burned into his forearm,” referring to the Nazis’ ID system for their victims. She also apologized for making “hurtful” remarks about residents of Gaza and promised to “be more careful.”Androsky, an outspoken progressive, later took another dig at Schumer with a comment about a cattle farm, writing: “I called it cowschwitz!!! either way they all (and amy) smelled the same.”The aide, who initially deleted his posts and then his entire account, did not respond to multiple inquiries from the LA Times for comment.Soto-Martínez called Androsky’s posts “disturbing and reprehensible.“With antisemitism on the rise in recent years and especially in recent weeks, cracking jokes about the holocaust isn’t just disgusting, it’s dangerous,” the pol, who chairs the council’s civil-rights committee, wrote on X.“These antisemitic and misogynistic posts sickened me, and I have accepted his resignation effective immediately,” he added.Mayor Karen Bass also condemned Androsky, who has served as a political consultant for at least three of the council’s 15 members.“The antisemitic and misogynistic comments made today were reprehensible, disgusting and dangerous and in no way represent the city family,” she said in a statement. “Especially now, City Hall must be a beacon of hope, not hate. I’m glad the staffer responsible has resigned.”The incident apparently began early Friday, when the TrueAnon account targeted Schumer after she posted a political cartoon derided as offensive to Gazans and to protesters seeking to end the Hamas-Israel war.LA’s Jewish leaders also assailed Androsky.Jake Flynn, a spokesman for Councilman Bob Blumenfield, said his boss was “appalled.”Sam Yebri, an activist who sits on the board of the legal services nonprofit Bet Tzedek, told the LA Times:“The fact that a city employee felt it was OK to make these words in a public forum, with such utter disregard for any consequences, is shameful.”Androsky has made offensive comments in social before. In 2017, he tweeted a joke about Bill Cosby that some criticized as insensitive to victims of sexual assault.Androsky later apologized and said he was “stepping back” from his work with the LA chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, according to an archived DSA post cited by the LA Times.
