A 7-year-old boy declared his Dallas bus driver a “hero” when she saved his life after swallowing a quarter. Preston, whose last name was not revealed, was laughing with his friends just moments before bus surveillance footage showed him putting something in his mouth. The Seagoville North Elementary School student, who thought he was going to puke on Sept. 29, rushed up to his driver Raquel Radford Baker.“He appeared to be sick, like he was going to throw up,” Baker told “GMA.” “I opened the door and I said: ‘Go ahead and throw up.'”Moments later, he would tell her there was a coin in his throat and Baker jumped into action, grabbing Preston and performing the Heimlich as she rushed to the sidewalk. “He can’t die in my arms, I have to save his life,” she recalled thinking. Surveillance footage shows the crucial moments the driver had while performing the life-saving technique outside the school. She did the Heimlich several times until the quarter launched out of the little boy’s mouth. “She’s my hero,” he told “GMA.” “She saved my life … She’s an angel.” On Thursday, Preston, his mom and Baker had a reunion, where his tearful mother thanked Baker for saving Preston. It was the first time Baker ever had to save a child’s life, she said. As for Preston, he vows to keep coins out of his mouth.
